A new collaboration between Clinical Providers Staffing and a 400-bed rural teaching hospital had led to a new Med-Peds hospitalist service line. The new service maximizes the efficiency and effectiveness of hospitalist coverage by providing physicians who can cover adult inpatients, pediatric inpatients, and neonatal resuscitation. The solution helps ensure that the hospital can continue to provide pediatric inpatient service as well as obstetrics. It also helps community pediatricians focus on their busy office practices. Patients also benefit from having trained pediatricians available around-the-clock in the hospital itself.

“It is wonderful to have been selected to lead the revitalization of inpatient pediatrics,” said Mark Jankowske, DO, who is leading the group for CPS. “The standard of care is gradually moving toward having a pediatrician available for newborns and children in the hospital. Having physicians on hand who can care for both newborns, children, and adults is an elegant and efficient way to provide those services.”

The CPS Med-Peds service uses physicians who are board-certified in internal medicine and pediatrics and have extensive experience caring for adult and pediatric patients in the hospital setting, including attending births to provide newborn resuscitation. Jankowske said that CPS plans to scale the program up gradually, providing night coverage at first and moving to full-time coverage a few months later.

“Our first priority is to give the community pediatricians their nights backs,” he explained. “This not only will improve their quality of life and their ability to focus on their community practice, but it also will give us time to work closely with them to ensure a smooth transition.”
